About

Jorge Guevara

Jorge Guevara teaches mathematics and Spanish.  He is a native Spanish speaker, having been born in Cuba and having worked in Costa Rica in business management before coming to the US and teaching mathematics in Houston as a Texas certified teacher.

He earned a B.A. in mathematics from the Universidad Pedagógica "Enrique José Varona" in Havana in 1996.  He taught geometry and algebra in the Houston, TX school system. He is passionate about mathematics at all levels.  Jorge demonstrated his facility up through graduate level mathematics in his interview with the board and our advisors.  This was readily verified by our board members with advanced mathematics backgrounds, one with a Ph. D. in chemical physics and another with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.  Jorge teaches more basic mathematics at a level that challenges students at the level that rewards them.  He finds the special skills in every student.

His philosophy for teaching Spanish and mathematics is expressed best in his own words from his CV: "Learning a foreign language will reinforce the grammatical structure of the student's primary tongue. Spanish will not only open space to cultural awareness, but to several other romance languages as well. Once a foreign language is learnt the ability to learn subsequent ones is gained. I believe this capacity applies even into the realm of computer programming since a strong semantic grasping is cemented in the young student. The enhancement of auditive skills is another profit I see in my lessons. While I am currently a Math Teacher, I see my experience as an asset, for Mathematics is a language after all; the most universal one."

After years of successful teaching in the public schools, Jorge sought teaching at an independent school.  He found the Academy on our Website and found that it met his vision.
