Our Outreach program presents a wide-ranging science demo, Light and Color at the Las Cruces Museum of Natural History in the Downtown Mall, Saturday, May 19th at 2 PM

Two of our teachers and one of our students graduated on May 11th from the very rigorous and world-leading phonics program of the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.  We have a brief story here.

Quick news: Generous donors have given us funds to offer partial scholarships for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year.

If you wish your child to be in our contest for scholarships, please be sure to submit the form that's available here, and be sure to submit the composition for possible publication.  There's more information here.

One donor, Will Beattie, visited the Academy to share insights on science and to add another donation, a beautiful book.

We are raffling off a beautiful, 100% cotton quilt made by Susan Houston, grandmother of one of our students.  Tickets are $1 each or $11 for 10, and are available at the Academy and from a number of our students' parents.  The drawing will be on the last day of school, May 24th, or early next term when sufficient tickets have been sold.  The winner need not be present.

On Wednesday, April 4th, our students performed Chinese songs for the Cultural Diversity program in the Commons area of Dona Ana Community College.  The program was a great success in everyone's eyes, including Confucius Institute teachers from China.  More news and images here.

We also appear close to having a beautiful new home, the former Preston Center for Contemporary Art in Mesilla.  We're near outgrowing our beloved suite on the Downtown Mall, and the construction outside our doors has been a bit challenging.  Pending approval from the Town of Mesilla via a special-use permit, we'd move to the new building over the summer.  We hope to showcase the location with more open house events soon. More information, including pictures, can be found here.   We'll keep you posted!  We are also working on finances for purchasing another fine property for a permanent campus several years hence.

Welcome to Las Cruces Academy's online home.  We're a private, non-profit, secular school for gifted and academically advanced children who thrive in this alternative to other schools.  Our focus is on languages, math, and science, but we fill out a good education with a variety of other subject areas.  All children learn English, Spanish, and Chinese every day, and now we have Farsi available after regular classes. We also understand that good teachers, intellectual freedom and engagement, and a supportive social environment are the most valuable gifts we can give to students.  Please read on, and, if you wish to explore having your child join us, please visit the admissions page.  The navigation bar at right leads you to much more detail about our philosophy and curriculum (or click here).  We also are pleased to share news of what is happening at the school currently.  We started the second semester of our third year of classes on Wednesday,January 4th, 2012, with 27 students in grades K-5.  We'll have an Open House event on Tuesday, Feb. 7th, at 8-10 AM and at 5:30-7 PM. You can see the list of our events on our calendar.  You can also make an appointment by calling our Director.  To find us on the Downtown Mall, see our map.

Our students of all ages do hands-on science.  Presentations and demonstrations are given by Ph.D. scientists.  We use the highly successful Singapore math program.  Our students spontaneously count in Chinese or Spanish when they exercise, and during birthday celebrations they sing in all three languages. They have access to over 4,000 books that have been donated and purchased by many people.

Scholarships are available, in large part thanks to continued support of our scholarship fund by El Paso Electric and, now, a number of new donations.

Outreach to the community and the public schools is mandated by our Articles of Incorporation. A concrete plan is for our students themselves to develop and run a public museum.  In this effort they will use a number of scientific and cultural artifacts that the Academy founders, Drs. Lou Ellen Kay and Vincent Gutschick, have acquired in their scientific careers and in travels to 36 nations.  As a kick-off for our outreach, we have written a series of one-page light essays on interesting topics in science.  These are located here.

Our financial status is open for inspection.  To see the documents, please click on Capital Campaign in the blue-background navigation bar, and then click on Financial status.

If you are a potential donor to the Academy, please consider augmenting the scholarship fund, capital fund, or our general fund. We plan to grow to a full pre-K - 12 school over the years, with your help.  If you wish to donate, please visit our Giving page, or call, write, or email us.  Thanks!
