Friday, 22 February 2019: Sharing world culture: Three LCA families were recently in Japan,
so they pooled pictures, souvenirs, other memorabilia, and stories at a potluck dinner
from 5:00-7:30 PM. Many LCA families came with good food to share. Jessica and Kevin Houston,
who spent the most time in Japan (6 months, with children Joaquin, Kaleb, and Kyraluna)
cooked takoyaki, which are round fritters, some filled with octopus. Teacher Kelly Lin and
her husband Chase, a medical student, traversed Hawaii, Japan, and Taiwan for a combined late
honeymoon and wedding reprise for relatives in Taiwan. Vince and Lou Ellen had spent two weeks
in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka with son David and daughter-in-law Yi. They brought arts and crafts
and other memorabilia to show. Vince made a looping slideshow of 100+ images from all three
trips; there were oohs, aahs, and laughter. Much good food and conversation filled the evening.
Kevin, Vince, and Lou Ellen shared stories with the group (Jessica left early to get an
engineering award at a dinner!). All the group, of all ages, enjoyed the food. Lots of
parents then helped clean up. Our school really has a sense of community and an inclusive
worldview.
